Competition versus Training Shoes
Competition vs. Training Shoes
Here's a video created by our colleague Edu Iranzo, from Urban Running Valencia, highlighting the most significant differences between competition and training shoes.
If you prefer to keep reading, here's a summary.
The most significant differences we find
– Training shoes have a higher sole profile for greater cushioning.
– Competition shoes are lighter and have a tighter fit, for faster paces.
– Training shoes have greater durability than competition shoes.
– Competition shoes are more reactive than training shoes.
Not everyone should wear competition shoes
That is our opinion as Running professionals.
When a person has similar training and competition paces, and not very fast: we do not advise competing with competition shoes. We recommend competing with a lighter training shoe or a hybrid shoe.
Besides, you will protect your joints much better by running in training shoes, as their cushioning and stability are usually superior to those of competition shoes.
Appropriate choice depending on the type of runner
The choice between competition and training shoes also depends on each runner's style and level. Elite athletes, with fast paces and intense training, usually benefit more from competition shoes to maximize their speed and efficiency. Meanwhile, recreational or beginner runners may find greater comfort and protection in training shoes, especially if they are looking to minimize the risk of injuries during long distances or less intense training. It is crucial to consider the fit, cushioning, and responsiveness of each model to best suit the individual needs of each runner.
