Putting on a bib again at the Perleta-Maitino cross-country race is part of the rehabilitation.
A little over three months ago, we received the shocking news of his accident. Our coach and athlete was cycling, training on his road bike, when he was hit by a vehicle that collided strongly with his body.
An example of iron will and overcoming adversity
It has been almost 100 days of intense recovery and some pain in his back, the part that took most of the impact. But it has also served the athlete from Elche, as he assures us, "to value every moment we live much more. To fight hard for what one desires most. And to hold on to the support and affection of the people who show they want to stay by your side in the worst moments."
After a very intense period of rehabilitation work, physical therapy, and strengthening, the recovery times have been shortened with very good sensations. As Pedro tells us, "the pain during the first few weeks made me think of the worst-case scenarios. But I only had one maxim in my mind: to run again and enjoy the simple act of taking a few strides without worrying about anything else. Those were moments when you miss something so simple. And you stop to think how hooked you are on this sport and how much it gives and has given me."

Reappearance at the Perleta-Maitino cross-country race
For that simple reason, Pedro Esteso, as soon as he medically knew he could do a light run, didn't hesitate. And he joined his group of runners from Urban Runners Club Elche. To be part of this great sporting celebration that took place yesterday in the Elche district of Perleta-Maitino.
And in this race, he was able to achieve what he most desired: to run without pain and to be a runner again wearing a bib. Where the chrono result was the least important thing, and being alongside people who enjoy running was the most important. As he confirms to us, "on many occasions, Juan Carlos and I are usually the ones who like to wait for our people at the finish line. But this time it was the other way around and very special to see many of them smiling and waiting for me with open arms at the finish line. Those moments stick with you and are why it's worth continuing to fight and create runners."
A horizon full of renewed hopes and new sporting challenges
From now on, new challenges full of effort will surely arrive. And with the main component of excitement to compete again, but to compete at a good level. And with several new features for this new season that presents itself for the Elche 2x1 with a very important event at the end of June in our city.
To say goodbye, Pedro Esteso clarifies the special dedication and the gesture of dedicating his race and his bib from his first race after "being born again" (as he tells us) to the person who was driving the car that November 30th. With whom he has a relationship of friendship and camaraderie that has united them and helped them to open their eyes even more. To gain more strength and draw endless positive experiences that he will continue to put into practice to live with that constant struggle that characterizes him.
He also wants to emphasize and highlight the spirit of camaraderie that continues to be felt in every race he participates in. With the Urban Runners, where they enjoy themselves before, during, and after each race, as could be seen yesterday in Perleta-Maitino. Where we continue to maintain our philosophy "You Never Run Alone." Betting on unity in shared effort and the transmission of values and experiences that our great family of runners brings us every day.
As well as thanking the trust placed and the support from the entire team of the Bernad family and this great opportunity to be an active part of Urban Runners Club Elche.
