AZKOITIA-AZPEITIA HALF MARATHON – DIEGO GARCÍA MEMORIAL

The Gipuzkoan towns of Azkoitia and Azpeitia are already preparing their streets for the Half Marathon that unites them.
Next Sunday, March 28th, the twenty-second edition of the Half Marathon commemorating Azkoitia-native athlete, Diego García, will take place.
The XXII Azkoitia-Azpeitia was presented to the public last week – on the 18th – and the organizers assure that participation will maintain the high level of previous editions, thanks to the confirmation of Kenyan, Ethiopian, and Ugandan athletes who will be the main candidates for victory.
But it is not the magnificent quality of these athletes that makes this Half Marathon great, but the massive participation of Runners – over a thousand are expected – which encourages people to come from all corners of our geography, seeking the great atmosphere it offers in addition to achieving their best times.
One of the main characteristics of the race is that its course is full of small climbs, which represents an added challenge for runners, and far from "scaring them off," it makes it more attractive for everyone. In fact, this is usually not a handicap given the times that are usually achieved in it.
New to this edition will be a rollerblading race which, together with the 3rd popular race, will complete the sporting offer on Sunday, March 28th.
Kenyan Edwin Kipsang – who finished second last year at the finish line in Azpeitia – is the favorite for victory, although names like Dawit Wolde, Emmanuel Bett, and John Kemboi, specialists and regulars on the podium in Cross Country and Road races, will not make it easy. In the women's category, another Kenyan, Mónica Jepkoech, along with Ethiopian Zewdnesh Ayele, will be the favorites.
