Choose the best walking shoes

Get back into your routine and do some sport: for example, walking.

In this article, we're going to explain how to choose good walking shoes, even if you've never thought about it before.

Do some sport and/or walk

Some of us are already getting back into our routines after the holidays. Many people don't do much sport normally, although at least a large majority walk. And on holiday, those who do tourism walk even more.

The opposite situation also occurs. People who have let themselves go and now want to get back in shape. And if you go back to doing sport after several weeks off, you have to do it progressively. Otherwise, injuries can occur.

If you choose walking to do some sport:

Footwear and socks are essential. Simply choose a pair of shoes that, when you try them on, feel comfortable. And confirm this by taking a few steps in them. That is the primary point to keep in mind.

If they also happen to have technical features that benefit you, even better.

Although we have them classified as lifestyle, Puma retro-running style shoes have cushioning, grip, and comfort that make them perfect for walking.

Choose comfortable shoes

At Be Urban Running we think this is advice that is too easy to follow and that it might cause problems for some. It's good for those for whom walking means going to buy bread and the newspaper…

Those who are going to walk more than five kilometers should ask themselves a few questions:

  • Are you going to walk on asphalt or on rocky terrain?
  • Are you overweight?
  • Have you noticed if your shoes end up deforming towards the inside of your foot?
  • Do you sometimes trip without knowing why?

Do running shoes work for walking?

Of course. Especially if we are going to walk in the city or on well-maintained paths (smooth and firm ground, such as parks or forest tracks).

However, if we choose technical running shoes for walking, we must be clear that their durability will not be as long as other types of shoes. It should always be remembered that:

– The more technical a shoe is, the sooner it will lose its properties –

When we talk about durability, we are talking about maintaining the same sensations as when they were new. Yes, we can use running shoes for several years, but the cushioning, support, and grip will not be the same as on the first day.

– Trail running shoes can also be good for trekking –

How to choose good walking shoes

Qualities that walking shoes should have:

  • Comfort
  • Good fit
  • Breathability
  • Grip
  • Durability

Comfort is necessary to avoid ending up with ruined feet and legs. Depending on the route a walker is going to take, a suitable shoe will be preferable to a prettier or more fashionable one.

A breathable upper is recommended to prevent our feet from overheating. Especially in a country like Spain where there are so many areas with above-average temperatures.

Gore-Tex membranes are only recommended if we are going to cross streams or rainy or very humid areas. If we are going to trek or walk in the mountains, we should choose trail running shoes or mountain shoes. As we will need footwear that protects our feet much more from stones, roots or more irregular terrain.

Shoes for walking in the countryside or mountains should be

  • A little heavier
  • A little less flexible
  • More firm and with external protections
  • With a slightly harder sole

A quality we haven't mentioned until now is cushioning.

For walking, it is recommended to wear shoes with some cushioning. But everyone has different preferences for the cushioning they like. Since it can be:

  • Soft and gentle cushioning.
  • Cushioning but with a slightly harder sole.

For long walks, those soles with a slightly harder feel at the beginning are recommended. And as we walk those kilometers, we will continue to feel that cushioning.

Flexibility is another important quality. You have to take the shoes and bend them, trying to bring the toe and heel together.

If we are going to do long walks, we should choose shoes that are not the most flexible. And for uneven mountain terrain, very flexible shoes are not recommended either.

The walking sock

Essential !!! We never tire of recommending a technical sock to always wear with sports shoes. Whether for running, walking, training in the gym…
Walking several kilometers with a 100% cotton sock can lead to overheating of the foot and blisters.
Trekking socks are ideal for walking, even on asphalt.
