Trail Running Socks: Differences and Features

Lurbel

The Lurbel brand was created in the 90s in the textile world in Ontinyent. It wasn't until 2007 that they really made a name for themselves and showcased their textile running technology, truly beginning to expand. The time had come to specialize in manufacturing trail running socks. All of this was thanks to Regenactive technology, which incorporates regenerative properties into their socks.

Lurbel trail sockmodels

This sock model provides a special feel. When worn, one feels great comfort, a sensation of complete foot coverage, which means not a single wrinkle is created. The height of this sock is H3; there are 5 types of heights, so the Desafío model is an ankle sock, extending 3 fingers above the ankle.

The brand offers this trail running sock model in 3 colors for men: black, red, and pistachio, and another 3 trail socks for women: two of them are black, and the third is gray with fuchsia. The available sizes are S, M, and L. The composition of the Desafío sock is 50% Regenactive, 25% Cool-Tech, 17% Polyamide Ion, and 8% Lycra.

Running textile technology

Lurbel has patented different technologies that offer various sensations and performance.

Specifically, the Desafío model socks include the following features, distinguished by the applied technology:

BMAX: A blend of threads distributed in different layers, creating an antibacterial and anti-odor fabric. It also reinforces the areas most prone to foot injuries, preventing irritation and overheating.

ESP: This technology incorporates protective systems to achieve less friction and greater cushioning. In terms of durability, this model offers fantastic resistance, and you can go on many runs with them without showing rubbing or fraying, especially in high-impact zones.

Track

This sock offers an H4 height out of 5 available heights, meaning it extends 4 fingers above the ankle, one more than the Desafío model, thus covering the Achilles tendon. This is an area prone to injuries, so this added security is appreciated.

Track socks are available in 3 colors. The sock body is gray, but the shaft varies, offering options in black, blue, and red. Sizes range from S to XL.

The composition of this sock is the same as the Desafío model. Another difference is that the Track model is thicker, due to a third layer. This is by no means a disadvantage, as using it in high-temperature activities does not result in more sweating than the Desafío model.

What it does provide is extra cushioning that adds comfort to each stride. This is a bonus that is especially appreciated during long runs. This Track sock is also regenerative and offers its patented Bmax and Esp technologies, meaning it is an antibacterial and anti-odor trail sock with great protection for less friction and more cushioning.

It's worth noting that, due to their thickness, many trail runners might mistakenly think these socks are not suitable for high temperatures. Quite the opposite, they are a very breathable garment that will keep your feet dry, and they also dry quickly if you step in puddles or run in the rain.

Trail CompresSport

CompresSport usually focuses more on road socks and their famous calf sleeves that revolutionized the market. But even so, the brand offers us the Proracingsocks for trail. These are the CompresSport trail sock models:

Proracingsocks 3D

When putting on this sock, you'll notice it's harder than road socks, Lurbel brand socks, or others. This is due to the technology it uses. Its main advantage is that, once on, it's a sock that offers great comfort and is extremely comfortable.

One of the great advantages of this sock is its 3D-dots technology, which provides an "Acupressure" effect, offering a pressure massage zone on the sole of the foot that stimulates blood circulation, thanks to its 3D-dots. These dots are one of CompresSport's main features.

What does 3D-dots technology offer us?

These dots are visible almost all over the sock. Initially, they provide support and good compression. They also help protect the Achilles tendon, as well as offering tremendous grip so the foot doesn't slip. In terms of breathability, CompresSport's trail socks from this brand have ultra-ventilated areas around the ankle and at the toe, to provide a greater sense of comfort and lightness, in addition to keeping your feet fresh and dry. These socks have no seams or any type of elastic. We have 6 colors: black with grey, black with red, and black with green in stronger or lighter shades.

The Specialist's Opinion

If I had to create a rating scale, I would lean towards Lurbel, then Compressport. I love Lurbel's breathability, despite the "thick" appearance of the Track model sock.

For races under 50 km, I use the Desafío model, and for training, I prefer the Track given its H4 height protects my tendon.

Regarding durability, Lurbel is the best I've tried. Obviously, over the years they lose their characteristics, but that happens with all brands. However, you look at them and they still seem new. I've never had a Lurbel sock tear. I change them because, before a hole appears, the shaft of the sock opens up.

It is worth noting the benefits of its "Regenerative" patent for long runs. On the one hand, it helps delay fatigue and, afterwards, regenerates micro-tears; it is extraordinary. The range of Compressport socks also includes a great product. I find them harder to put on than Lurbel, but only at first.

Its comfort and tendon protection are remarkable, but in terms of durability, I think Lurbel is better. The 3D-dots technology is something noteworthy, that massage on the sole of the foot and generating blood flow.
