Hoka Speedgoat 5 Review

HOKA ONE ONE Speedgoat 5 Trail Running shoes continue to stand out for their versatility.

These are shoes to enjoy, to run and run without thinking about hours, distances, or terrains... They are very versatile, and their name comes from Karl Meltzer, who is known as "The Speedgoat."

Meltzer is an ultrarunner who holds the record for wins in races over 100 miles (161 km...) because his motto is "Go everywhere, run everything."

What's New in the Speedgoat 5

We highlight five new features:

They are now lighter, thanks to the midsole foam compound being slightly lighter.

The collar shape at the heel is more classic, like in running shoes (e.g., the Clifton). This now allows you to relieve some of the tension generated in the heel when climbing. This reduces the possibility of that area of the foot suffering on ascents.

On the outsole, the compound at the back is more durable.

The new lug pattern is 5 mm high, which gives you more grip, especially on technical or loose terrain.

And finally, the last is now slightly wider.

Features of the Hoka Speedgoat 5

They are very light, weighing approximately 234 grams for women and 291 grams for men.

Regarding the drop, it remains at 4 mm, although due to Hoka's construction, this measurement doesn't mean the same as it does in other trail shoe brands.

Like other Hoka models, when you see them in photos, they appear much heavier and bulkier than they are. When you hold them or put them on, the sensations change.

Those who have run with them highlight their comfort when stepping, and that you don't feel small stones on the trails.
upper hoka speedgoat

The upper is made of a lighter, more breathable, and more comfortable mesh. Partially constructed with recycled polyester and double jacquard.

Protective toe cap. The front area around the toes is more reinforced to protect them from stones and rocks when running on more technical surfaces.

The upper hugs the foot a bit more than the previous version.

Midsole made of Eva foam, which provides a lot of cushioning and comfort. We've already mentioned that you won't feel the small stones you step on.

The midsole has a late-stage meta-rocker shape. Besides giving you a faster and smoother stride, it helps you get better traction on uneven terrain.

Outsole with the Vibram MegaGrip compound provides excellent grip. The lugs ensure additional traction and durability, making them perform very well on rough terrains and surfaces. The outsole's durability has also increased.

With the new lug pattern, the sole grips better on more types of terrain, both wet and dry.

Furthermore, the combination of a wider sole and the Vibram Megagrip compound will help you out of many tight spots, even in muddy areas.

Speedgoats last and don't break. You'll see that they hold up very well over many kilometers.

Who are the Hoka Speedgoat 5 for?

Designed and made for Trail Runners with good running technique who plan to run distances from half marathon upwards.

All Speedgoat versions stand out for their versatility, both in the distances to be covered and the paces they can handle. And thanks to the new features of version 5, a greater number of mountain runners can now wear them.

They perform well in both 30km races and long, even very long ultras...

And they can be used for average ultra paces, as well as going faster on sections that allow it.
