Las mejores rutas para correr por la costa de Málaga, Barcelona y Valencia este verano

The best coastal running routes in Malaga, Barcelona, and Valencia this summer

There's something special about going for a run when you're on vacation. There's no rush to get to work, you can forget about the clock for a bit, and if you've chosen a coastal destination, you have one of the best possible backdrops for logging miles: the sea.

Because yes, waking up early in summer is tough. But doing so knowing that a practically empty promenade, the sunrise, and a swim afterward await you changes things quite a bit.

This summer, we're heading to three cities where running and the Mediterranean go hand in hand: Malaga, Barcelona, and Valencia. We've selected six routes, two in each destination, so you can discover them by running, whether you're looking for a leisurely jog or need to do a long run during your vacation.

Here are some of the best coastal running routes in Malaga, Barcelona, and Valencia this summer.

Malaga: running with the Mediterranean always by your side

Malaga has something any runner appreciates during vacation: miles and miles of coastline that allow for a lot of improvisation.

You can simply go for a half-hour jog or plan a long run by linking different coastal areas. Plus, a good portion of the routes are practically flat.

However, in mid-summer, the Malaga heat is relentless. Getting up early here is especially worthwhile.

La Malagueta – Baños del Carmen – Pedregalejo – El Palo

If we could only choose one route to discover Malaga by running, it would probably be this one.

You can start near La Malagueta and head east along the coast. Little by little, you'll leave the more urban area behind to reach Baños del Carmen and continue towards Pedregalejo and El Palo.

And it's precisely this evolution of the landscape that makes the route so entertaining.

The sea is practically never out of sight, and as you advance, small beaches, beach bars, and some of the most recognizable images of the Malaga coast begin to appear.

Distance: approximately 8-12 km depending on the turnaround point.
Surface: promenade and asphalt.
Difficulty: easy.
Ideal for: leisurely runs, medium runs, and aerobic training.
Best time: early morning.

Our advice is not to rush too much. If you're on vacation, this is one of those routes where it's worth forgetting about pace for a few kilometers.

And if it ends with a swim in the Mediterranean, even better.

Antonio Banderas Promenade – Misericordia – Guadalhorce

If you want to run more kilometers and are looking for a route that's more focused on training, change direction.

The western area of Malaga allows you to link the Antonio Banderas Promenade and Misericordia Beach, extending the route towards the mouth of the Guadalhorce River.

Here you'll find long, fairly consistent stretches, perfect for maintaining a steady pace.

Distance: approximately 8-15 km, easily adaptable.
Surface: asphalt and pavement.
Difficulty: easy.
Ideal for: continuous runs, long runs, and controlled paces.
Best time: sunrise or late afternoon.

If you have a long run scheduled during your vacation, we'd probably choose this one over the previous one.

Barcelona: miles between beaches and city

Barcelona is a fantastic city to discover by running because in just a few kilometers you can go from some of its most famous landmarks to running literally next to the Mediterranean.

During the summer, one important factor to consider is the crowds.

Barceloneta and the promenades near the beaches can get crowded quickly, so getting up early here isn't just about avoiding the heat. It also allows you to enjoy the route much more.

Barceloneta – W Hotel – Olympic Port – Forum

You can start in Barceloneta, go to the W Hotel, and then change direction to run along a good part of Barcelona's coastline towards the Olympic Port and the Parc del Fòrum.

It's a practically flat route and very easy to adapt.

Only want to run 5 kilometers? Turn back earlier. Need to do 15? Continue along the sea.

Precisely this ease of modifying the distance is one of its greatest attractions.

Distance: between 5 and 15 km depending on the route.
Surface: asphalt and pavement.
Difficulty: easy.
Ideal for: all types of runs and long runs.
Best time: before 9:00 AM.

If you are preparing for a half marathon or a marathon during the summer, this route is particularly interesting because it allows you to accumulate kilometers without significant elevation changes.

Port Vell – Barceloneta – Barcelona coastline

Our second proposal is a bit more touristic.

The idea is to start in the Port Vell area and use Barceloneta as a connection to the promenade, then continue along the beaches.

Here, the goal doesn't have to be to have the fastest workout of the week.

It's a perfect route for those days when you simply want to go for a run and experience the city in a different way.

Distance: approximately 6-10 km.
Surface: mainly pavement and asphalt.
Difficulty: easy.
Ideal for: easy runs and running tourism.
Best time: sunrise.

Moreover, running early has its rewards: you'll be able to see some of Barcelona's most crowded places before the city fully wakes up.

Valencia: probably one of the easiest cities to be a runner in

If you run regularly, Valencia needs little introduction.

The city has built an enormous culture around running and boasts something many runners would love to have close to home: the Turia Garden.

But in summer, we want the sea.

And here we have the possibility of combining both.

Valencia Marina – Malvarrosa – Patacona

This would be our first choice for anyone wanting to enjoy the Valencian coast.

From the Valencia Marina, you can start heading towards Malvarrosa and then continue to Patacona. The route is simple, practically flat, and allows for a very consistent pace.

Moreover, if you go out early, you'll find many other runners doing exactly the same thing.

Distance: approximately 6-12 km.
Surface: asphalt and promenade.
Difficulty: easy.
Ideal for: runs, consistent paces, and recovery.
Best time: early morning.

It's also a perfect route if you're just starting to run, because you can turn back practically at any time without complications.

Turia Garden – City of Arts and Sciences – Marina – Malvarrosa

If you need mileage, this is our favorite.

The idea is to take advantage of one of Valencia's great benefits: being able to link the Turia Garden with the City of Arts and Sciences, continue towards the Marina, and end up by the Mediterranean Sea.

This way, you get a much more varied and, above all, easily expandable workout.

You can design a 10-kilometer run or turn it into a 20 km run depending on your starting point and the route you take through the Turia.

Distance: approximately 10-20+ km.
Surface: asphalt and prepared paths.
Difficulty: easy.
Ideal for: long runs and half marathon or marathon preparation.
Best time: early morning.

Running by the sea in summer: beware of the heat

Just because we have the Mediterranean breeze nearby doesn't mean we can forget about the temperatures.

Especially in Malaga, Barcelona, and Valencia, the heat and humidity can significantly change how a workout feels.

Whenever possible, avoid the middle of the day and prioritize the early morning hours. It's also important to hydrate properly and, when the duration of the workout requires it, carry water using a soft flask, bottle, or hydration pack.

For long runs lasting over an hour, it may also be necessary to consider electrolyte replenishment, especially if you sweat a lot or finish workouts with characteristic white salt stains on your clothes.

And there are two very simple accessories that can make a big difference: a breathable technical cap with sun protection and sports sunglasses with UV protection.

According to our expert Santiago Navarro…

For Santiago Navarro, coach and Spanish Master Trail Running Champion, running in the summer means accepting that our body won't always respond the same way it does during cooler months.

And this becomes even more important when we are on vacation, sleeping in a different place, or have changed our usual schedules.

Frequently asked questions about running along the coast in summer

What is the best time to run in Malaga, Barcelona or Valencia in summer?

Whenever possible, we recommend going out first thing in the morning, when temperatures are lower and the promenades are less crowded. Sunset can also be an alternative, although on some days the accumulated heat throughout the day is still high.

Which of these routes is best for a long run?

The combination of the Turia Garden, Marina, and Malvarrosa in Valencia offers many possibilities for accumulating kilometers. The Barcelona coastline towards the Fòrum also allows for easily creating long routes.

Do I need to carry water?

It will depend on the duration, conditions, and your individual needs, but in summer it is especially important to plan your hydration. For long workouts you can use soft flasks, bottles, or a hydration pack.

Is it better to run on the sand or the promenade?

For a regular workout, we recommend the promenade. Sand significantly alters running mechanics and can increase muscular demand, especially when it's soft. You can use it occasionally, but there's no need to run on the sand just because you're by the sea.

This summer, pack your running shoes

Vacations don't have to mean stopping running. In fact, they can be the perfect opportunity to forget about our usual routes for a bit and discover new places doing what we love most.

Malaga for getting lost among its promenades and neighborhoods by the Mediterranean. Barcelona for covering miles of beaches before the city wakes up. Valencia for linking the Turia with the sea and running practically as many kilometers as we feel like.

These are some of the best routes for running along the coast of Malaga, Barcelona, and Valencia this summer, but they certainly won't be the only ones.
