End of August, September or April…
Depending on the location, storms begin, and we want to keep running despite the rain…
Feeling the water directly on your skin can be very pleasant when running, which is why I recommend not covering up too much. Besides, you might get overwhelmed if the fabrics don't breathe, and you could add the weight of the water retained in your clothes.
Thus, the clothes you wear should be appropriate when running on rainy days.
10 tips that may be useful if you run in the rain
1- Don't forget to hydrate. Your body needs a minimum of water when exercising, whether it's raining, cold or not.
2- Do your warm-up at home or in a covered place. Don't forget your warm-up just because it's raining; it should be a bit longer. You might need to spend a little more time on the exercises you usually do.
Keep in mind that a humid and cold environment can increase the risk of muscle injuries.
3- This is not a day for intervals or intense training. Vary your plan with the idea of exercising in a relaxed way. High intensity in the rain can be "very costly" due to the risk of injuries, slips…
4- Make sure the circuit you choose today will be free of delicate or problematic areas. Rain can wreak havoc, and you must make sure you run without risks.
Avoid potholes, broken or uneven terrain, construction zones, sidewalks you know are more slippery…
5- If you are a Trail Runner, also avoid areas that could be slippery due to mud or heavily covered in water.
6- Equip yourself with synthetic (technical) running clothing that repels water and also breathes.
If you train in cotton fabric, you will be more uncomfortable. Because it soaks up all the water and stays in the garment. So it will weigh much more and chafe you in sensitive areas.
If you opt for a waterproof garment, make sure it's not just a simple plastic. Today we have garments available that repel water and are also very breathable, avoiding running "inside a sauna".
7- If, despite appropriate clothing, you usually get chafing, rain can increase that possibility. For those with more sensitive or atopic skin, it is recommended to apply petroleum jelly to sensitive areas or where they have previously experienced chafing.
8- Keep in mind that in rainy conditions, visibility is significantly reduced. It's not so much about you seeing well, but about being seen by others. Equip yourself with brightly colored clothing. If it also has reflective content, even better.
9- If it's one of those days where the rain is accompanied by wind, it might be too annoying, and you should use a hooded garment or, failing that, a well-fitting cap with a visor that covers your face.
If in your town rain and wind always go together, ask for a waterproof and windproof running jacket. Trail Running jackets are usually ideal for these situations.
10- If you normally use your phone or gadgets during your runs, store them inside waterproof garments so you can continue to use them later. And you can also use waterproof cases.
When you finish running on rainy days
After a Running or Trail training session, if you can, quickly get under cover to perform your post-workout stretches.
Always keep in mind that you should not let your body cool down too much. And then change your clothes as soon as you can.
Once at home, the gym, or the stadium, a contrast shower is one of the best ways to end your run today. Contrasts consist of alternating cold water with hot water. And especially on the muscular areas of your body, particularly your legs.
Finally
Remember to wash your clothes if possible on the same day. And also dry your shoes so they are ready for the next day.
A trick for drying running shoes is to stuff them with kitchen paper or similar. This quickly soaks up the moisture from inside.
If you live in a place where it rains frequently, when buying running shoes, look for Nike Shield or those with the acronym GTX. These initials mean they have Gore-Tex.
